A recovery after a difficult qualifying
Kimi Antonelli finished fifth in the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix after starting 16th. His weekend included practice problems and a Q1 crash; Formula 1’s report also records floor damage during the race.
The result brought ten points. George Russell won, reducing the gap between the Mercedes drivers from 81 points to 66. Antonelli left Baku with 302 points and eight Grand Prix wins for the season.

Our take: recovery matters, but so does the lost ground
A rise of 11 places is the headline, but the more useful comparison is with the championship rival. Fifth limited the loss to Russell, yet the weekend still cost Antonelli 15 points of his advantage. Both things can be true: a valuable recovery and a missed opportunity.
It also shows why finishing position alone does not tell the whole story. A fifth place from the front of the grid carries a different meaning from fifth after starting 16th. Reading qualifying, the race result and the standings together gives a clearer view of the weekend.
For the next round, the question is whether Antonelli can put himself back into contention from the start. Baku demonstrated recovery; a cleaner qualifying session would give him less ground to recover.
